What have Srivijaya left behind for us?
Srivijaya was mostly forgotten by the beginnings of the 19th century until a French historian named George Coedes declared it's existence in one of his works.
Did you know??? Even though the Indonesians now look at Srivijaya with large amounts of nationalistic pride, they did not know of the existence of the kingdom until a foreigner rediscovered it for them! One of the greatest legacies of the Srivijaya Empire is their language in which we have adapted today. The countries that inhabit previously Srivijayan territory uses the Malay-Indonesian languages. Indonesia will continue to take pride in Srivijaya as a part of its history. Depicting its former glory and greatness. |
An aerial photograph of this primary source taken in 1984 near Palembang (in what is now Srivijaya archaeological park) revealed the remnants of ancient man-made canals, moats, ponds, and artificial islands, suggesting the location of Srivijaya's urban center. Several artifacts such as fragments of inscriptions, Buddhist statues, beads, pottery and Chinese ceramics were found, confirming that the area was once a dense human habitation.
